Laser Skin

Laser skin care has become one of the fastest growing anti-aging therapies that improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The laser skin treatment has achieved popularity over traditional methods because of the advantage of the laser skin method due to lack in discomfort, bleeding, and bruising. In the past, damage surface on skin is mainly treated by means of chemical peels and dermabrasion using a wire brush or diamond wheel to remove the top layers of the surface. This traditional procedure is very rough on the skin and causes wounds and bleeding. The idea is that as the wound heals, new layer of skin grows in place of the old. The bleeding caused by this traditional procedure, however, makes people feel uncomfortable. Laser skin treatment, on the other hand, is safer and gentler on the skin than they ever have been.

laser skinIn the laser skin procedure, a high-intensity laser beam is aimed at certain part of the skin and penetrates deep into the tissue. The laser beam produces heat which can be controlled and will give a therapeutic effect. The goal is actually the same as other skin treatments, i.e. removing the top layer of the skin and fill in crevices and wrinkles accordingly. Despite of offering the same benefits as laser skin care, traditional methods such as chemical peels or dermabrasion results are unpredictable. In contrast, the outcome of laser skin treatment can easily be determined prior to the procedure.

Before proceeding with the laser skin procedure, there are some preparations to be done. For example, special lotions, creams, or gels may be recommended. To avoid any other complications, oral medications may also be prescribed. The procedure itself is rather simple and can be performed in an office, hospital, or even outpatient center. During the procedure, a topical anesthesia is typically applied, whilst general anesthesia is probably needed for treatment of deeper layers. The duration of each session of the treatment may vary depending on the required procedure. After the procedure, there might be some minor side effects such as mild discomfort and swelling which can be dealt with ice packs and prescriptions provided by the doctor. Care to the treated areas should be taken, for example, by avoiding excess contact with sunlight.

Despite the advantages of laser skin treatment, not everyone is suitable for the treatment. For instance, individuals with olive, suntanned, or black skin are not recommended due to the extended time they need to regain normal pigmentation after the treatment. A person who is prone to scarring, has a disorder, or is taking certain medications is not suitable for the treatment as well. Consultation with a physician or dermatologist will be able evaluate the appropriateness of the treatment.
